Mission San Juan Capistrano is the third largest visitor attraction in Orange County behind Disneyland and Knotts Berry Farm. Over 500,000 visitors a year experience the beauty of this world famous Mission. Father Junipero Serra founded Mission San Juan Capistrano in 1776, which is known as the Jewel of the Missions. It is renowned for its beautiful courtyard gardens and legendary "Return of the Swallows" on March 19th of each year. The historic downtown area features the Mission, the historic Capistrano Depot railroad station and the beautiful Los Rios Historic District. Everything is within walking distance of the Mission. Shopping, dining and entertainment opportunities abound throughout the downtown area. It is one and one half miles from the ocean, midway between Los Angeles and San Diego, 62 miles from Los Angeles and 65 miles from San Diego.The City is blessed with pleasant summers and moderate winters with offshore prevailing breezes.

Known around the world as the
home of The Swallows of
Capistrano who return from
Argentina every spring and stay
until autumn.

2 The Capistrano Depot (1894)
Historic railroad station
(Sarducci's Capistrano Depot

This red brick, dome topped railroad
station, now a popular
restaurant was built in 1894 by
the Santa Fe Railroad and is the
oldest Mission Revival style rail
station in Southern California.
At the time of it's completion it
was called "the finest depot on
the Santa Fe system."

3 Los Rios Historic District
The Los Rios District includes 31
historic structures, is one of the
oldest neighborhoods in
California and includes three
adobe homes built in 1794 as
housing for families with ties to
the Mission. Cottage shops, several
restaurants and galleries
line Los Rios Street intermingled
with private residences as well
as the beautiful botanical gardens
of Ito Nursery. Located
within Los Rios District are the
following three discoveries.

4 Montanez Adobe (1794)
Oldest home in California in Los Rios Historic District

This adobe was the home of
Polonia Montanez who was in
charge of religious instruction
of the village children from
1886-1910. Polonia once led the
children on a spiritual trek as
they journeyed in prayer and
song to break a long drought.
On the third day while praying on
Capistrano Beach, the rain
poured and three wagons were
sent for Polonia and the
Children.

The O'Neill Museum

Garcia in the 1870's, This
Victorian beauty is now home to
the San Juan Capistrano
Historical Society and O'Neill
Museum.
Cross Creek Cowboys and other
rustlers frequent the Old
Capistrano jail cell.

6 Zoomars Petting Zoo and Bird Park - (Traditional barnyard circa 1895 )
A favorite destination for families,
where children can ride
ponies, a mini-train and enjoy petting
and feeding little critters.
This completely restored three acre
mini-farm is typical of life in
Old Capistrano near the turn of
the century.

7 Egan House (1883)
This terra cotta brick building
was built in 1883 by Judge
Richard Egan, a local farmer
turned judge who became known
as the "King of Capistrano". It
was here that Judge Egan entertained
his friends including many
influential and famous people of
the day including actress Helena
Modjeska.

8 Historic Town Center Park
The community gathering place
for many events including the
popular San Juan Summer Nights
Concert Series, the year round
Farmer's Market (both on
Wednesdays) and The Annual
Christmas Tree lighting.

9 Blas Aguilar Adobe (1794)
Native American Museum

Dating back to 1794, Blas
Aquilar Adobe is associated with
Don Blas Aquilar, the last
Alcalde governor of the
Mexican/Rancho era. The adobe
was once the focal point for
area political and governmental
activities and now houses a collection
of artifacts from a nearby
Native American excavation
site and burial ground. |

structure has received numerous

12 Mission Basilica Church
This magnificent church is a
larger copy of the Great Stone
Church. The church bell tower,
whose bells can be heard
throughout town, makes it the
tallest building in Old
Capistrano. The interior features
decorative painting using
motifs and colors found in the
original stone church. |
